The Historic Caswell Carpet, It's home is at The Metropolitan Museum
This is the very famous Caswell Carpet. It was created by Zeruah Higley Guernsey Caswell. (wow what a name) Katherine Keyes gifted this giant 160"x147" woolen applique´and embroidered masterpiece to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City in 1938. Apparently the wools used to make this piece were sheared from the family sheep, spun, dyed and woven on the Caswell property. The rug was started in 1832 and completed in 1835. Simpler woolen rugs such as this are often called "penny rugs," and are not so very difficult to craft. We will be including free patterns here based upon this historical carpet. Designs are copyrighted as they are published and should only be used for personal projects. Artworks created from these patterns can be sold but the patterns themselves should never be sold or redistributed from any other collection online or elsewhere.
